The maintenance of a life story, in any form is always better than lost them. Audio-taping a personal or family history, a good way to people's voices, and the entire audience on their lives can be. (You can also think of the video recording.)

Taping can be a creative solution, but not necessarily easier than writing. If you think yes, many are in for a surprise!

Of course you can record the stories of fist, "but it will be the same quality of rawfirst drafts of a written story.

For the best results, that is, to finish your project with a comprehensive, thoughtful, meaningful, entertaining and satisfying life on tape, you will need to:

1) Prepare your recording the same was a writer prepares his written story. You will have to decide whether you want to link your stories chronologically, thematically, biographically or by the era.

2) Grapple with the questions of theme as you try to make meaning out of your life’s experience.

3) Deal with truth. What is it and how much of it should you tell? (Is it really easier to speak the truth aloud on tape than to write it on the page?)

4) Conduct interviews and do research to make sure your facts are correct. You will also have to make use of memory jogs.

5) Face pain and experience the therapeutic effects of telling your story.

6) Listen to your story and have others listen to it to help you to edit it. You will have to re-tell it in the same way that a writer has to re-write.

Using these tips will help you produce an accurate and meaningful audio record of your families stories.

Remember: audiotapes need players; books can be opened anytime, anyplace–even years from now. Books are bigger and less likely to be misplaced. And, you can’t erase or melt a book in the same way you can destroy a CD!

Good luck recording your memoir-or some one else’s!
