Offering a tantalizing blend of convenience and quality, Sony's amazingly affordable 5-disc Super Audio CD (SACD)/CD changer makes music listening exciting again. Now you can spin hours of consecutive music and enjoy premium-quality sound all from the same carousel player. Depending on the disc, SACD music releases provide super high-fidelity multichannel and/or stereo sound--far greater in resolution than standard audio CDs. The system employ's Sony's proprietary DSD (Direct Stream Digital) digital-to-analog conversion. A 1-bit system operating at an extremely high sampling frequency of 2.8224 MHz (64 times that of standard CD), DSD production begins by converting analog audio (i.e., the original sound signal) to digital without filtering or other techniques that might compromise the integrity of the source. DSD allows for a frequency response that can extend to 100,000 Hz and a dynamic range greater than 120 dB. Multichannel releases offers special, discrete sound mixes created to take advantage of a home theater's front left/right, rear left/right, center channel, and subwoofer configuration, the better to envelop you in your favorite music as you've never heard it before. Most reissued multichannel discs also offer superior-sounding 2-channel (stereo) versions of the albums as you know them. The SCD-CE595 performs its own decoding of SACD signals, passing high-resolution analog, not digital, audio to your integrated amplifier or surround receiver. This means you'll need an audio/video receiver with multichannel analog-audio inputs to appreciate multichannel SACD releases. Built-in SACD multichannel speaker management helps you tailor the individual outputs to your system. Choose from a set of stereo and a set of multichannel analog-audio outputs, and--for use with standard CDs--there's also an optical digital-audio output that simplifies hookup with CD and/or minidisc recorders and other audio gear. Sony hit a home run with this, the best SACD player on the market for the average guy making the switch to super audio. When I changed from stereo to SACD I first bought one of those player that does both SACD and DVD. Nyet!
I don't care much about DVD and music is a large part of my life. I have collected classical recordings for 35 years and wanted to hear what those hybrid SACDs had to offer in SACD. My first experience was a nightmare; then I bought this machine.
Today I've listened to the Bach "St. Matthew Passion" highlights, Berlioz' "Symphonie Fantastique" and, now, Bach's "Two and Three Part Inventions" by Glenn Gould. Each of these SACDs delivers something a little different -- the Bach was made last year and is true surround sound; the Berlioz was recorded in 1959 and is three channel without surround sound; the Bach, recorded in 1964, is SACD in stereo only.
But each of these recordings, when played on this machine, sounds like they were made yesterday. This machine is easy to set up, easy to use, delivers great sound and has five disk trays so you can load it and play it all day long.
This is an excellent machine for people that want to hear SACD disks and doesn't cost much at most places. You'll like it and you'll really like the sound it produces for you. |
Sony SCD-CE595 exceeds expectations

I bought a Toshiba SD-6915 multi-format 5 disc changer because it did SACD, DVD Audio, and CD. It was terrible and I returned it. It has the worst user-interface and ergonomics on the planet, and I noticed several bugs in the 2 days I owned it.
So after returning the item, I decided to exchange it for the Sony 595 SACD/CD player. Wow! the audio quality was amazing over my previous CD player. My wife said immediately when listening to CD's its like we had a new stereo and she could understand the lyrics in some songs that she couldn't before.
My stereo is a very good audiophile type setup, so I was surprised that the CD player was my weak link. I have Magnepan planar magenetic speakers, an Adcom 120W amp, and a Denon preamp. Previously, I had a Denon 5 CD changer that was about $400 in 1995.
I also listened to the 2 or 3 SACD's that I have and they also sound wonderful, but I am amazed at how everything sounds so much better with this unit.
I was also very happy that the SACD player lets you specify whether each of the 5.1 channels is present and a large/small speaker. It also lets you adjust the balance which is nice so that I can not send audio to my center channel which is a fairly lo-fi speaker.
The Sony SACD also has reasonable ergonomics and lets you select shuffle, straight play from a button on the front. Basically, it has all the buttons you need for the player on the front so you don't need to find the remote to use the player.
I am very satisfied with this player and it is too bad that nobody makes a player that works this well and does DVD audio as well. |
A Great Audiophile Bargain

The Sony SCD-CE595 has to be one of the great audiophile bargains of all time. I got it for $120 through Amazon and it is replacing a $3000 CD playback system.
The $3000 system consists of a $1200 Theta Digital D/A converter, a $800 Cal Audio Labs transport, $800 worth of upgrades on the Theta, and $300 worth of cables and accessories. It is about 15 years old. The last upgrade was about 10 years ago.
While the older system has a more refined top end, the cheap Sony has more detail, better bass, and good dynamics. I have tried several newer CD players and they all suffer from flattened dynamics and lack of detail. Those are the areas the Sony gets right. I have a Pioneer SACD/DVD player which sounds terrible in comparison with the Sony, although they are almost the same price.
I only have 2 SACD discs and based on that, I'm not going to be purchasing SACD versions of all my CD's. I can really only hear the difference when listening through my Seinnheiser HD 600 headphones. The SACD has better low level detail, but only people with a very high definition system will be able to hear the difference.
At the price that Amazon sell this CD changer, it is an absolute steal! |

I received the Sony SCD-CE 595 a week ago and really enjoy it. My wife originally purchased an OPPO 970HD for me for my birthday; however, after recalibrating and TV adjustments I didn't feel the picture was as good as my Sony NS70H so I returned it. It made more sense to get a 5 disc multichanger instead.
Its a pretty simple player but has enough adjustments to dial it in. One interesting note is that adjusting the multichannel output seems to impact the digital output! I originally had the Sub Woofer output kicked up pretty high for multichannel but felt the digital optical sound was somewhat dull on the highs and heavy thump to bass. I remembered reading a review on here that suggested the bass management setting impacted cd and sure enough, I turned down the SW output a few notches and it made a significant difference. Adjustments in the multichannel settings seemed to improve the 5.1 sound of regular CD through my receiver so that I listen to most music in surround mode. The only negative could be that it is a little slow to read the discs initial but once it has it moves quickly between tracks.
PROS:
- Plays SACD at price of normal CD changer
- Multichannel Adjustments for speaker distance and speaker output
- Great sound on SACD and CD's
- Holds 5 CDs
- Shuffle play and can exchange a CD while playing another
Cons:
- No power button on remote (can be controlled by receiver if so equipped)
- Takes a few seconds to read disc initially (due to dual laser for SACD?)
In the end, I really love the multichannel and CD output. I have it adjusted just the way I like it for SACD and CD. I have a Diana Krall SACD and it sounds great. The CE595 has a simple remote with no power button but since I have a Sony STRDE998 I can easily control it through the main remote and it powers on and off with the receiver.
This combined with my awesome Ascend Accoustics speakers make for a lot of music listening these days. I have gone from almost never listening to music to 10+ hours a week!
There are other choices available but it is difficult to beat the price and performance of this unit. Enjoy!

| If this thing had proved a dog, I was only out $120.00. It's a classic no-brainer. But what a surprise - it works and sounds great. I didn't want a changer, and still find them (and this) a bit 'clunky', but couldn't find a single CD component player like my old Denon. And with this you get SACD. The few SACDs I've gotten all sound amazing. (I must have at least five versions of Steely Dan's Goucho by now!) I'm a convert. Just wish there were more SACD choices. But even my old CDs sound crisper and more detailed on this player. You can't lose. Buy It! |
