| This is one of the best CD players I've used. I listen to a lot of Books on Tape and this player picks up exactly where you leave off even if you stop it to do something else for awhile. It's fairly good about playing scratched CDs and has not jumped while I have been working out in the yard or walking with it. The ear phones are OK but get bit irritating after wearing them for a time. If you are looking for a good CD portable player without the radio, this is it. It is pretty light on battery use also. |
Disabling anti skip vastly improves the sound

When I first began listening to a CD I was not impressed with the sound of this player as it seemed somewhat veiled or recessed. I played with some of the functions, such as the Mega bass boost, which basically ruined the sound by drowning it in bass, then I tried using the AVLS automatic volume limiter - a function I can't ever foresee using.
I found my answer through a careful read of the instructions regarding "G protection.
By canceling the anti-skip function the sound VASTLY improved. Since I do my listening in "non" active mode, I'm not jogging or wrestling while listening to the music, this listening mode is the perfect one for me.
To disable or enable the G mode, press the off button, then press and hold down the fast forward button then press and hold down the play button. Wait a second or two and look in the display window for G-off or G-on. You will then notice a dramatic improvement in the sound quality.
As for battery installation, it took me about 20 seconds to install a pair of Lithium batteries. A child could do it blindfold.
Pair this player with a decent set of headphones ( I bought Sony MDR-150) and you've got quite a nice sounding setup. In normal mode, which I use exclusively (meaning no bass boost and G-off) the sound is rich, extended, clear (meaning surprisingly transparent for a player in this price range) and most importantly, it does not pain your ears during long listening sessions.
Overall, I am quite happy with this Sony. |
Just Along For The (Bus) Ride

| I bought this to while away the 40 minute bus ride to work. It's a great little machine. Simple and straightforward, compact and easy to operate. The battery life is good. I'm at about hour 10 and still going strong. Actually the battery insertion is not the easiest, and the earphones that come with it are not very good; mine were broken on the second day (mysteriously, a wire poked through the earpiece) so make sure you have your own. But as I said the player works great, and the battery life is good. As for the battery insertion - actually the battery removal, take the innermost battery out first. |

| got it for my Dad to walk with.He found it had too many buttons! He's 83 and can't see well. It kept gettign stuck on pause which frustrated him! When he had it working he LOVED it and couldn't believe it's great sound! |

Pro:
- anti-skid really works here. No skid of any kind,
- battery saver big time,
- internal battery compartment, won't fall out by accident (goes well with anti-skid)
- remembers where it left off! If I open the cover and close and restart, it starts from where it left off!
Neutral:
- sound quality is ok, no better or worth than my $300 Yamaha or my $9.99 generic brand player from Target. The trick is the headphone. I only listen with Grado SR325 or SR125. Any CD play sounds equally fantastic. It's all in the disk, all in the headphone jack. You just need the right headphone to bring it out to your ears.
Con:
- buttons too small and hard to decipher, display is TINY and almost impossible to read. Doesn't come with AC power converter. But for $30 at Target, I shall withdraw my complaint and give it a 5-star rating instead.
Save your bucks for a pair of great the Grado headphone set. It's not the player. BTW, only reason I returned the $9.99 one and got the Sony instead is that the generic brand player doesn't have anti-skd and any slight touch will make it play from the very beginning - too annoying.

Offering a tantalizing blend of convenience and quality, Sony's amazingly affordable 5-disc Super Audio CD (SACD)/CD changer makes music listening exciting again. Now you can spin hours of consecutive music and enjoy premium-quality sound all from the same carousel player. Depending on the disc, SACD music releases provide super high-fidelity multichannel and/or stereo sound--far greater in resolution than standard audio CDs. The system employ's Sony's proprietary DSD (Direct Stream Digital) digital-to-analog conversion. A 1-bit system operating at an extremely high sampling frequency of 2.8224 MHz (64 times that of standard CD), DSD production begins by converting analog audio (i.e., the original sound signal) to digital without filtering or other techniques that might compromise the integrity of the source. DSD allows for a frequency response that can extend to 100,000 Hz and a dynamic range greater than 120 dB. Multichannel releases offers special, discrete sound mixes created to take advantage of a home theater's front left/right, rear left/right, center channel, and subwoofer configuration, the better to envelop you in your favorite music as you've never heard it before. Most reissued multichannel discs also offer superior-sounding 2-channel (stereo) versions of the albums as you know them. The SCD-CE595 performs its own decoding of SACD signals, passing high-resolution analog, not digital, audio to your integrated amplifier or surround receiver. This means you'll need an audio/video receiver with multichannel analog-audio inputs to appreciate multichannel SACD releases. Built-in SACD multichannel speaker management helps you tailor the individual outputs to your system. Choose from a set of stereo and a set of multichannel analog-audio outputs, and--for use with standard CDs--there's also an optical digital-audio output that simplifies hookup with CD and/or minidisc recorders and other audio gear.
